CS2 Season 5 Begins: Cache Returns, C4 Reworked, New Collections Arrive

Valve has launched Premier Season Five in Counter-Strike 2, bringing significant changes to the competitive landscape and gameplay mechanics. Headlining the update is the return of Cache to the Active Duty Map Pool, replacing Overpass.

Gameplay Overhaul: C4 Explosion Rework

Season 5 introduces a major rework to C4 explosion damage across all official defusal maps. The damage is now applied based on precomputed simulation values, baked into the map. Crucially, the explosion shockwave damage now expands rapidly from the center of the explosion rather than being applied instantly. Players can use environmental cover, as the shockwave dissipates around corners and does not penetrate walls. A health bar preview will now indicate potential damage from an incoming blast.

Armory Expands with New Collections

Responding to the recent Call to Arms community announcement, two new weapon collections have been added to the Armory: Spy Tech and Arabesque. Additionally, two new sticker collections, Fruits & Vegetables and Auto Racing, are now available. The Train 2025 and Sport & Field weapon collections, along with the Sugarface 2 and Elemental Craft sticker collections, are no longer available.

Community Maps and Bug Fixes

The update also introduces several new community maps:

  • Competitive, Casual, and Deathmatch modes: Boulder, Fachwerk, and Shelter
  • Wingman mode: Debris and El Dorado

Conversely, community maps Warden, Stronghold, Alpine, and Sanctum have been removed from all game modes.

Various bug fixes and quality-of-life improvements have been implemented:

  • Reduced performance cost of showing the scoreboard.
  • Fixed a case where picking up dropped weapons through the Buy Menu would fail.
  • Fixed material blending effects disappearing when too close (e.g., dirt on Inferno barrels).
  • Increased sticker rotation precision to allow half-degree increments.
  • Updated engine code to the latest version of Source 2.

Map-specific adjustments include:

  • Cache: Various clipping adjustments.
  • Dust II: Fixed pixel gap and clipping adjustment Outside Tunnel.
  • Inferno: Clipping fix to prevent pixel boost at Top of Mid.

For workshop creators, the "Custom Paint Job Extended" feature now includes options for a dedicated overlay mask texture and unique overlay UV randomization. Map scripting also sees additions like Instance.QueueAfterThinks, Instance.OnWeaponDrop, and CSWeaponBase.GetOriginalOwner.
