Behind AZ3: Designing a Nuclear Crisis for Operations

Season Meltdown's centerpiece is AZ3: The Nuclear Power Plant, the first new extraction map since Tide Prison. The Delta Force Operations Team designed AZ3 to add meaningful depth to Operations gameplay, focusing on risk assessment, value searching, and player decision-making within a familiar crisis setting.

A Setting Players Already Understand

AZ3 leverages the inherent understanding players have of a nuclear facility. The map blends industrial decay with advanced systems, creating a "modern ruin" where progress has failed but remains dangerous. Outer areas offer observation, while the damaged plant narrows the pace, leading to the reactor building with its high rewards and increased risks.

Pressure That Can Be Read

Radiation in AZ3 is designed as a dynamic pressure system, not a simple timer. It builds in stages, affecting movement, vision, and survival at higher levels. Cleanup rooms and specific equipment allow players to manage radiation exposure, making it a strategic judgment call. The Geiger counter also serves as an indicator of potential high-value loot, linking danger and reward.

Searching Should Leave a Trace

Looting in AZ3 is more interactive. High-value spaces are tied to the environment, signaled by sound, radiation, or requiring keycard chains. Interacted-with areas can leave visual traces like sparks or smoke, providing soft signals about previous player activity and influencing route decisions.

A Facility Under Stress

AZ3 is a dynamic environment. As a run progresses, the plant shows signs of stress, with systems failing and areas reacting. The reactor status provides a shared pulse for the match, making the facility feel like a living, pressured system rather than a static arena. Player actions contribute to the plant's state, creating a less scripted and more organic experience.

A Threat That Changes Your Posture

H1000, the plant's security chief transformed by Havvk technology, acts as a mobile combat threat. Unlike traditional bosses, H1000 actively hunts high-threat Operators, using flanking maneuvers, smoke, and tranquilizer darts. His presence forces players to adapt their movement and strategy, with Medic Operators gaining a crucial role. H1000's music and behavior are designed for recognition, allowing experienced squads to master the encounter.

An Ending You Help Write

AZ3 introduces a unique late-run opportunity tied to the plant's fate, with outcomes influenced by player choices. Whether squads commit to objectives, chase loot, or interfere with others, their decisions collectively author the run's conclusion. This design aims to make the ending feel like a direct consequence of player actions, creating memorable and often unpredictable stories.

Easy Mode for Learning

AZ3 launches with both Easy and Normal difficulties. Easy mode provides a less punishing environment for new and returning Operators to learn the map's complex systems, including radiation, reactor status, keycards, interactive loot, and H1000. This approach ensures that a complex map remains accessible for players to find their footing and for experienced squads to refine their strategies over time.

Season Meltdown and the AZ3 map are designed to test player judgment and create unforgettable shared experiences. The new season is live now.
